ABGC’S “Fireball Angels” won their U12 rec division at Fairfax Police Youth Club’s (FPYC) Father’s Day All Star soccer tournament last weekend.
Competing in the top division of the tournament, primarily comprised of teams that are considered pre-travel, the Annandale team beat out five other teams for the top spot. The FPYC Father’s Day tournament has different age groups playing all over Fairfax at various schools and parks for this two-day event, with a total of 29 teams entered in the U12 girl’s age group alone.
The Fireball Angels, a recreation team that plays in the Suburban Friendship League, were one of three ABGC teams entered in the U12 age group. The team advanced to the championship game by beating teams from Loudoun and McLean, and tying a La Plata, MD team. In the final game, on Sunday afternoon, they had a rematch against the La Plata Freedom, the team they tied early on Saturday. The rematch was a fitting ending to the tournament, as both teams were clearly the two best in the tournament and evenly matched. After 60 minutes of tough regulation play, the game was tied at 2-2, forcing extra time. Scoring in the first extra period, the Fireball Angels held on to win 3-2.
The team was coached by Nate Carmody and Callie Hyder.
