Va. State Cup: Rescheduled finals weekend set to kick off at SportsQuest
Eight Virginia State Cup champions will be crowned at the SportsQuest complex in Midlothian, Va. this weekend as the semifinals and finals of the tournament’s fall edition get underway on Saturday afternoon.
Wet weather forced a late postponement of the event last week, originally scheduled at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, but SportsQuest’s large campus of artificial-turf fields – not to mention a drier forecast – effectively guarantees that the games will be played, to the obvious relief of organizers left frazzled by constant rainouts this season.
That’s not to say that there won’t still be complications for the 32 teams participating in the semifinals, of which 22 are based in Northern Virginia. The state Department of Transportation will be conducting bridge replacement and related road construction along I-95 in downtown Richmond from Friday night until Monday morning, with traffic narrowed to one lane in each direction, so VYSA has urged State Cup participants to plan their travel accordingly.
Saturday morning SAT testing has prompted a later-than-usual start for semifinal matches. The Under-15s will kick the day off at 2 p.m. as Herndon Boca Juniors meet Arlington Strikers Red and Beach FC U15B Red battles Richmond Kickers Elite on the boys’ side, while girls’ top seed PWSI Courage 96 Red takes on Beach FC U15G Red and VSA Heat 96 will clash with FASA Elite Impact 96.
The slate unfolds age group by age group, with U-16s in action at 4 p.m., U-17s at 6 p.m. and U-18s at 8 p.m. Sports Quest field #7 will host a tripleheader of Annandale Boys and Girls Club teams, with ABGC Hawks playing SOCA Lightning Elite in a U-16 semifinal and U-17 sides ABGC Knights FC and Reston FC 94 facing off before the club’s Annandale United FC squad, top seed in U-18 Boys competition, tangles with Virginia Legacy SC Wizards in the nightcap.
At this level of the tournament, all games can be expected to offer quality and tension. But a few matches stand out due to their combatants’ recent history of distinction: the Herndon Firecats look to extend their domination in U-17 Girls’ competion when they take on the Lee-Mt. Vernon Patriots on Sports Quest field #5 at 6 p.m., while the Chantilly Burn will be carrying high expectations into their U-18 Girls’ duel with Richmond Kickers Elite immediately afterwards.
ABGC and Beach FC lead the field with four semifinalists from each club, while Prince William Soccer and the Richmond Kickers are represented by three teams apiece.
Saturday’s winners will advance to their division finals on Sunday, which are scheduled to begin at noon and conclude with the U-17 Boys title game at 3 p.m.
