Rising U-17 Annandale United FC Boys started off their season with a bang in Greensboro, NC at the National Cup Southeast Regionals. They began their campaign by winning 5-1 against Cardinal Brazil Boys. Christopher Palacios saved a penalty. Than they tied local team ESSA in a thrilling game that was very close. Trey Echazaretta tied the game with 10 mins to go in the second half. AUFC had to win Sunday to qualify for the finals and they did 2-1 against ACS Orange. The finals was a very close game between ABGC and Virginia Rush, so close that it had to go to overtime. Olo Sembrera scored the winning goal in the first 10 min. overtime and the boys had to hang on for the second ten minute overtime in the 95 degree heat with Rush wanting the win badly. ABGC Rising U17’s hope to continue their run of good form in Indianapolis for the National Cup Finals.
Annandale United started the preliminary rounds with a 2-0 win over Rhone Island’s Portsmouth Pirates. The team battled through rain and wind to move past the STA Morris United of New Jersey 2-0. The next day Annandale defeated West Virginia’s Epic Blizzard 3-0 at Marshall’s Veterans Memorial Complex to win Group A with a 3-0 record and become one of two teams to leave the preliminary rounds with zero goals against them .
Annandale then defeated Delaware Rush Nike 98 2-0 in the Region 1 Semifinals and moved to the Championship match where they faced Beadling SC of PA West, recreating the match up in the Champions League Final. Shortly before halftime, Beadling was able to score. Annandale continued to push and had numerous chances throughout the second half, but Beadling held on to the lead.
The Annandale 98 Girls maintained a creative style of play and represented Annandale, the state of Virginia and the Champions League well. The team looks forward to State Cup and National League this fall, and has been offered early acceptance to most of the major national tournaments for the 2015-2016 year.
